Christmas Caramels
               from Dogwood s California kitchen

2 cups sugar
1¾ cups white Karo
1/2 lb butter
1 pint whipping cream
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup walnuts, chopped

  Bring karo, sugar, butter to boil; add whipping cream slowly; do not allow the boiling to stop; stir constantly. Boil to hard ball stage (242°F at sea level -- calibrate your candy thermometer!)

Add nuts and vanilla; do not beat. Pour into buttered pan and when cool, cut into 1-inch squares and wrap each in wax paper and then in colored Christmas paper to cheer them up.
